On Monday September 26, 2022, NASA successfully flew a spacecraft into an asteroid. It was to try out a planetary defense protocol known as Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). The rocket "DART" was the size of a “vending machine or golf cart” compared to the stadium-sized space rock. But the experiment proved that if done early enough, hitting an oncoming asteroid could slow it down and change its course altogether. Now that’s just comet sense. This article written by Joel Achenbach is out of this world and might be super cool to share with your littles who are interested in all things space related.
NASA Science had an excellent Space Place online with Skywatching Tips and games they can play! Check it out here!
There is also an Art challenge going on now as well. NASA likes to challenge young explorers to think about and draw a space-related situation each month. And after the month is over, they'll select a few imaginative drawings to be featured on the NASA Space Place website!
So, get ready to exercise that creative brain! Here’s what your littles will need:
Paper
Art supplies (pencils, markers, crayons, paints – whatever you like to use)
A grownup helper with a camera or scanner and access to email
How to submit your art:
Once you’ve gotten your ideas on the page, have a grownup take a photo or scan of the drawing and email the following to NASAKidsArt@jpl.nasa.gov:
- Picture of drawing
- First name of artist
- Age of artist
- Completed release form (download here)*
In addition to this, any artwork you all make together, please email it to us as well so we can pick a few to showcase in a future newsletter here! I am sooooo looking forward to see your little one's artwork. Email me anytime!
And I'm off! Until next time!
